AMATEUR

DATE OPPONENT SITE RESULT REFEREE

According to an article in the May 31, 1913 issue of the Pittsburgh Press, Harry Greb began boxing as an amateur in the beginning of 1913.

"Harry Greb, latest debutante into pro ranks, is the son of a Millvale Ave. contractor. Harry was stung by a fight bug less than six months ago. His rise has been rapid. Pewter prizes satisfied him until the night Battery B boys held a smoker. Then Greb heard the jingle of coin and promptly proceeded to look for a manager. "Are you game?" queried a well known pilot when approached by Greb. "Well I guess yes. I fell off a three story house and lit on my head without being hurt" was the lad's rejoiner. The quip resulted in a pact to exploit the Millvale avenueite."

In Atlantic City where Dempsey was training for his first Tunney fight in 1926, Jack Dempsey offered Greb a thousand dollars a day to put him in condition for the bout. Greb, who had retired from the ring two months before, turned it down. "I would feel like a burglar takin' Jack's money," he said. "Nobody can get him in good enough condition to whip Gene."

------taken from "Give Him To The Angels"

Harry Greb was seen at the Dempsey/Tunney fight Sept. 23, with a patch over his right eye. This was because of the surgery he had replacing his eye with a fake one. He soon had the auto accident while wearing the patch, went under anesthesia for the operation, and never came out of it.

***Harry died Oct.22, 1926, following operation.

***Tiger Flowers died in New York, Nov 16, 1927, (the next year) from effects of an operation

***Harry Greb was elected to Boxing Hall of Fame in 1955

Harry Greb is near the top of the boxing list for "Most consecutive bouts without a loss"

1916-1923 178 bouts without a loss!

The following are stats that were done by The Ring magazine starting in 1922 until the death of Greb in 1926. These stats were reprinted in the Ring issue "75 years of The Ring" Vol. III, No.1 -this issue was supplied by the Lydon Cousins

1922

THE RING's FIGHT OF THE YEAR- Harry Greb W15 Gene Tunney

Tunney, the newly crowned American light heavyweight champion, takes a 15-round beating from Greb. His nose broken, and badly cut over both eyes, Tunney somehow stays on his feet until the final bell. He'll later say of his only defeat, : I never learned as much in any single fight." He and Greb will fight four more times.

THE RING's FIGHTER OF THE YEAR- Harry Greb

Most of Greb's 13 bouts are no-decisions, but two victories more than earn him top honors. In March, Greb, not yet world middleweight champion, decisions light heavyweight Tommy Gibbons, and in May, he defeats future heavyweight champion Gene Tunney. It turns out to be the only defeat of Tunney's career. Greb ends the year at 69-2-2 (35) with 153 no-decisions.

Pictured here is Greb on the cover of April 1922 issue of the Ring Magazine. It was the third issue of the Ring ever published, first was in February. Harry was the first fighter of the year for Ring Magazine.

THE RING's UPSET OF THE YEAR-Gene Tunney W15 Harry Greb

After having taken a beating in his first fight with Greb, Tunney dominates the rematch, keeping his rival at bay with his jab and landing rights under the heart when in close. In the 14th, Tunney staggers Greb with a right to the head, then pounds him in the 15th. The winner regains the American light heavyweight title, handing Greb his first defeat in more than seven years.
