Leo Houck
Leo Houck fought Hall of Famers Jack Britton, Jack Dillon, Harry Greb and Gene Tunney during his career. He fought for the championship twice in his career, each time in a different weight division.
The first time he fought for the championship was on November 15, 1913 against George Chip for the middleweight title. It was Chip's second defense of the title. Leo lost a hard fought battle.
The second time Houck fought for a title was in 1918 for the light heavyweight championship. He boxed Battling Levinsky who was reigning champ for 2 years. Leo lost in 6 rounds and Levinsky kept the title for another 2 years. Seven years prior to this fight Leo had beaten Levinsky in Boston on October 24, 1911.
One of Leo's impressive wins came when he beat Johnny Wilson 2 years before Johnny was to win the middleweight championship. Other wins by Leo Houck were against Frank Mantell, Harry Lewis, Battling Levinsky and George Chip.
Later in life Leo Houck became a boxing referee. Pictured here is Leo during one of the boxing matches he refereed.
