Yankee "Young" Gilbert
Yankee Gilbert was a light heavyweight from Philadelphia and West Virginia. Before his 1915 fight with Jack Dillon it was said Yankee Gilbert fought "over a hundred encounters with the cream of the foreign boxers". Gilbert was known for possessing "an awful wallop in both hands", as well as a long reach that he used to fight on the outside.
In the Lima Daily News on September 5, 1915 some of Gilberts past fights were listed: "A few of the men he has met and defeated in Paris, London, Rome Italy, Antwerp, Philadelphia and New York are: Jim Mills, Charley Webster, Gunner Hicks, Frank Thorne, Ted Cook, Pierre Roasaanke, Seesaw Kelly, Lew Frank, Spike McFadden, Joe Allison, Leo Darcey and Battling Levinsky."
